Potential Reasons for Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can range from mild discomfort to a major problem that can affect your quality of life. The discomfort may occur only when you move your shoulder, or it can occur on a regular basis. Here are some of the reasons you may be experiencing pain.

Bursitis

Your shoulder has several small sacs filled with fluid that are called the bursae. They act to cushion the area between your tissues and bones, reducing friction and helping mobility. When we put our shoulders through stress due to repetitive motions such as throwing, the sac between the rotator cuff and shoulder blade can become swollen and inflamed. This could make even everyday activities very painful, such as getting dressed and brushing your hair.

Tendinitis

Another very common source of shoulder pain is tendinitis, which occurs when a tendon wears down gradually over time. This problem usually affects the tendons that surround the rotator cuff. In some instances, however, tendons can tear due to degeneration or an injury.

Instability

This occurs when part of the arm bone is displaced from the shoulder socket, either due to overuse or an injury. One form of instability is known as a subluxation, or shoulder dislocation. A dislocation can be partial, where the ball of the upper arm bone comes part way out of the socket, or full, where it comes out completely.

Arthritis

The most common form of arthritis that leads to shoulder pain is osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear. It is usually characterized by pain, stiffness and swelling
