A herniated disc is an extremely painful condition that can, in some instances, even be debilitating. As the body ages, the discs located in the spine can dry out over time. When this happens, they become less flexible and are susceptible to rupturing or tearing with even minor twists or sprain. Here are some of the more typical reasons this problem occurs, as well as the types of people who are at the highest risk.
Why It Occurs
Most people who suffer from a herniated disc are unable to pinpoint the exact reason it occurred. Some people develop one due to lifting heavy objects improperly, using their backs more than their legs. Others twist or turn the wrong way when lifting something, while others develop the problem due to some sort of back trauma, such as a fall or a blow to the back. The most common cause, however, it degeneration over time due to normal wear and tear. When the discs in our back dry out they can form small cracks or tears. This can allow the gel within the disc to be forced out, leading to herniation.
Risk Factors
There are certain factors that can increase the risk of a herniated disc occurring. Men between the ages of 30-50, for example, tend to be more susceptible. As stated earlier, lifting heavy objects improperly can put a great deal of stress on the discs and lead to a rupture. Repetitive activities that constantly lead to bending, twisting or pulling on the back can also cause problems, as can repeatedly driving for long periods of time. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you may be at a higher risk for the condition. Try to exercise regularly to lower that risk.
